India's panel price crash could spark solar revolution

SOLAR power has always had a reputation for being expensive, but not for much longer. In India, electricity from solar is now cheaper than that from diesel generators. The news - which will boost India's "Solar Mission" to install 20,000 megawatts of solar power by 2022 - could have implications for other developing nations too.

Recent figures from market analysts Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) show that the price of solar panels fell by almost 50 per cent in 2011. They are now just one-quarter of what they were in 2008. That makes them a cost-effective option for many people in developing countries.

A quarter of people in India do not have access to electricity, according to the International Energy Agency's 2011 World Energy Outlook report. Those who are connected to the national grid experience frequent blackouts. To cope, many homes and factories install diesel generators. But this comes at a cost. Not only does burning diesel produce carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change, the fumes produced have been linked to health problems from respiratory and heart disease to cancer.

Now the generators could be on their way out. In India, electricity from solar supplied to the grid has fallen to just 8.78 rupees per kilowatt-hour compared with 17 rupees for diesel. The drop has little to do with improvements in the notoriously poor efficiency of solar panels: industrial panels still only convert 15 to 18 per cent of the energy they receive into electricity. But they are now much cheaper to produce, so inefficiency is no longer a major sticking point.

It is all largely down to economies of scale, says Jenny Chase, head of solar analysis at BNEF. In 2011, enough solar panels were produced worldwide to generate 27 gigawatts, compared with 7.7 GW in 2009. Chase says solar power is now cheaper than diesel "anywhere as sunny as Spain". That means vast areas of Latin America, Africa and Asia could start adopting solar power. "We have been selling to Asia and the Middle East," says Björn Emde, European spokesman for Suntech, the world's largest producer of silicon panels. Over the next few years he expects to add South Africa and Nigeria to that list.

The one thing stopping households buying a solar panel is the initial cost, says Amit Kumar, director of energy-environment technology development at The Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, India. Buying a solar panel is more expensive than buying a diesel generator, but according to Chase's calculations solar becomes cheaper than diesel after seven years. The panels last 25 years.

Even in India, solar electricity remains twice as expensive as electricity from coal, but that may soon change. While the price drop in 2011 was exceptional, analysts agree that solar will keep getting cheaper. Suntech's in-house analysts predict that, by 2015, solar electricity will be as cheap as grid electricity in half of all countries. When that happens, expect to see solar panels wherever you go.

Awesome app
AirCover is a user-friendly comprehensive security app
Protect your Android device from loss, theft, viruses, malware and other threats. That's the premise. For this reason AirCover has been developed as a comprehensive security app divided by categories that cover all the potential threats to your Android device or personal data.
The app is basically divided in 6 tabs. From "Mobile Security" you scan and remove viruses and malware, set guardian features (monitor downloaded files, running processes and Internet surfing) and finally check out permissions which you're installed app are using. From "Family safety" you can add you family members devices and watch where they are via GPS or give them an emergency call through the app.
Your data matters, for this reason AirCover contains a "Cloud Backup" section that allows you to backup/restore contacts, photos which will be uploaded to a AirCover server. "Device Found" keeps track of your phone via GPS in order to check where it's from AirCover website in case of loss or robbery. "System Tuneup" is a device booster, that's it, a task-killer, cache cleaner and ram releaser. Finally, "Battery Doctor" is a dashboard from where you can monitor you battery status, time remainin in standby, 3G, WiFi as well as your battery health and maintanance.
If you're impressed due to the amount of features it includes, you'll probably like to know that it has been set in a good-looking layout and an user-friendly interface that makes things way more easier. In a nutshell, Anti-virus and malware, cloud backup, battery monitor, task killer, remote device tracking... everything that concerns security merged in a single app. Highly recommendable.

How the new iPad stacks up to competitors

Thumbnail for this storyNow that the new iPad is here and official, it’s much easier to compare its specifications against those of the host of competitors that have flooded the tablet field since the introduction of the iPad 2.
And while the changes to the iPad may seem more evolutionary than revolutionary, the tweaks were just enough to all but ensure that the iPad will stay at the top of the pack for at least another year. Sure, the tablet will lose marketshare, but Apple was able to neatly and efficiently address the majority of major complaints about its tablet with the upgrades to the new iPad.
Apple added better cameras, 4G LTE and made a couple of significant internal upgrades to the tablet, all with the aim of making it a better machine for content creation.
It also takes on a wave of competitors who banked on offering one or more of those features in order to get a niche of customers that prized one or more of those features enough to look off the beaten path at iPad alternatives. Adding 4G? That’s a punch in the eye for tablets like the HTC Jetstream, T-Mobile Springboard or Galaxy Tab 10.1, which have been able to argue their network speeds as a selling point against the iPad 2.
Apple even took a step to take on its low-priced rival, the Kindle Fire, by dropping the price of the iPad 2 by $100 to a $399 price point. That’s definitely still expensive, but it may be enough to sway people who were considering the $199 Kindle Fire but want a fuller tablet. With a cheaper iPad, Apple’s main competitor for the new iPad is probably itself.
The iPad still has its vulnerabilities, though. Samsung is still arguing that its new Galaxy Note 10.1, with its S-Pen stylus beats any version of the iPad in the content creation game. And Apple still hasn’t added—and isn’t likely to— say, an SD card slot or HDMI port, choosing instead to challenge tablets with more ports (Toshiba Thrive, Acer Iconia) or expandable memory (most Android-based tablets) with iCloud storage and streaming through Apple TV. And the company still hasn’t introduced a smaller tablet at a time when the 7-inch form factor seems to be catching on with tablet consumers.
There’s also always the possibility that Microsoft, with its plans for Windows 8 tablets, will be a challenge to Apple in the enterprise market — an area where Apple has been making a big push. According to a report from  there’s not much in the new iPad that will tempt businesses, but the introduction of Microsoft Office on a tablet has the potential to be very interesting to businesses.
Overall, however, Apple’s managed to stay just enough ahead of the rest of the market to stay the strongest competitors in a field that’s growing more crowded every day.
