What Will Happen When Microsoft Inevitably Kills Skype?

Given the company's track record, Microsoft is bound to neglect Skype, in which case I propose another tech giant should buy it.

After Microsoft simply walked away from its purchase of aQuantive, leaving a whopping $6.3 billion on the table as if it was chicken feed, you have to assume that Microsoft can and probably will do the same thing with Skype.
Then what?
The Wikipedia page listing Microsoft's mergers and acquisitions is pretty eye-opening. First, you'll notice that there are a lot of merger and acquisition deals listed. We must assume there are many that are not listed. The second thing you'll notice is that almost all of the companies disappeared without having made much of an impact. In the case of companies such as aQuantive, there was zero impact and this cost the company $6.3 billion.
In many instances, you can see the acquisitions may have been good for an idea or some personnel but not real products. Visio is one example of a real product that the company kept alive. Microsoft's acquisition of Forethought in 1987 became PowerPoint and its 1997 acquisition of Hotmail still exists as MSN Mail or Live Mail or whatever the company is calling it.
There are a few for sure, but when you really examine the list, it's clear that Microsoft spends money like a drunken sailor. It squanders the shareholders' resources in a horrendous manner.
It's obvious to me that most of these companies never had to be acquired. They had CTOs who invented technologies and were looking for ways to cash out. Microsoft could have tracked down these people and lured them away with a $5 million signing bonus and a 10-year deal with a fancy office and staff.
I suppose it was easier to buy the company for $100 million and let it fall apart. I'm sure the mergers and acquisitions attorneys love Microsoft!
Whatever the case, it is now apparent to me that Microsoft will walk away from the $8.5 billion Skype operation the same way it did with aQuantive.
You have to wonder why Microsoft would buy Skype in the first place. Did it somehow fit in with an initiative that already had similar technology and was pointless? Or was it that each user was worth $30 or so?

IBM Acquires Lotus Development Corporation

Skype has revenues approaching a billion dollars but this could result in enormous losses for all we know. Supposedly, there are some profits. According to sources, Microsoft paid 32 times the operating profits, which is generally different than actual net profits. That means the company made around $265 million in operating profits.
Although there is potential here, Microsoft seldom manages potential well, as we've seen with PowerPoint. It's hardly changed in almost 30 years.
So, you can be sure the company will abandon Skype like it has abandoned everything else. But what will happen then?
At first, I thought that we'd be stuck with all the mediocre SIP clients that stink by comparison. On second thought, though, I'm confident that Skype will linger under new ownership or be revived by the founders.
Much of the world has become dependent on Skype and nobody feels too comfortable that it's now owned by Microsoft, considering the company's track record. Here's a thought: sell it to Google. That would be interesting, no?

Nifty Way to Safely Move Folders or Programs to Another Drive or Partition in Windows 7

Would you like to move some folders or programs off the C:\ drive to free up space or to reduce wear and tear on an expensive SSD? Unfortunately, moving folders or files off the C:\ drive to another drive or partition is not always as simple as it seems. The folder or file may be referenced in the Registry or in some script or application. If it is an installed program you are moving, you would have to uninstall it and then re-install it in the new location. Making an ordinary shortcut file won’t do because shortcuts look like separate files to programs and the Registry.
A previous tip showed a method for safely moving certain personal folders. In this tip I will show a general but simple way to move programs or other folders and files while maintaining all the original references. In fact, you can make it appear that your folder or file is still on the C:\ drive when it has actually been moved to another drive or partition. Moreover, you will be able to access or even edit the object from either place although there is only one copy. It brings to mind the old expression about having your cake and eating it too. The method uses what are called symbolic links. (A simple explanation of what symbolic links are can be found in this article.)
Symbolic links can be created in the command line with a special command that was first introduced in Vista. It is called Mklink (described in more detail here) and here is how it works for a folder:

Before doing anything, make sure you have a backup of your system
Move (not copy) the desired folder (let’s call it ExistingName) by the usual methods to its new destination on the X:\ volume. Give it whatever name you choose. Let’s call it NewName but it can retain ExistingName if you wish. At this point programs and Registry references may be broken. It is necessary to move the folder first since otherwise no symbolic link can be created on the C.\ drive
Next open a command prompt with elevated privileges. (This previous tip explains how.)
Enter the command mklink /d C:\ExistingName X:\NewName The switch /d indicates that we are linking folders (directories). No switch would be used if a file was being linked. If your folder name has spaces, you have to enclose the path name in quotes.
If a link is successfully made, the command line will show a message “symbolic link created for ExistingName <<===>> X:\NewName”.
Close the command prompt

That's all it takes. All of the previous Registry or other references to C:\ExistingName will continue to work. The command creates a small object on the C:\ drive that retains the previous folder name and behaves as if it has the contents of the folder that is really over on the X:\ drive.
It’s the magic of symbolic links.

DNS Changer Virus: Internet Access to be Cut July 9

People whose computers are infected with the 'DNS Changer' virus will lose access to the Internet on Monday, July 9, 2012, unless they take steps to remedy the situation.
Right now the Federal Bureau of Investigation is wrapping up an operation designed to help such victims maintain their online connections.
DNS Changer is named after the domain name system that helps translate website addresses (such as www.infopackets.com) into a string of numbers known as an IP address, which is the way computers actually identify the machine where a particular website is physically stored.

'DNS Changer' Uses Misdirection

This process works through special computers known as DNS servers, effectively the Internet's version of a telephone directory. DNS servers carry a constantly updated list containing the correct IP address for each individual website.
Normally a user seeking a website first accesses a legitimate DNS server operated by their Internet provider and obtains the desired site's correct IP address.
The DNS Changer virus, however, caused infected computers to instead access a fraudulent DNS server operated by the people controlling the virus.
This rogue DNS server contained bogus IP addresses, so when a user thought he or she was visiting a legitimate website, such as an online bank or retailer, they were actually visiting a phony site controlled by the scammers.
Usually this site was set up to look like the legitimate website, in hopes of tricking the user into providing their user name, password, and even credit card details. This information is passed immediately to the fraudsters instead of to the intended, legitimate website.

FBI's Temporary Solution Coming to an End

DNS Changer was widespread in 2009, but in 2011 the FBI arrested those suspected of participating in the scheme and -- for technical reasons -- obtained court authorization to continue operating the fraudulent DNS servers after loading them with accurate IP addresses.
As a result, infected computers already programmed to look for the fraudulent DNS servers could continue to do so, but would now receive correct IP address information from the FBI. Thus, those computers resumed operating normally. (Source: fbi.gov)
This measure was always intended to be temporary and is set to be switched off on Monday.

Typing in IP Address Only Way to Access Websites

When that happens, every computer still infected with the DNS Changer virus will keep looking for the fraudulent DNS servers, which will no longer be available. Cut off from the IP addresses of any and all websites, infected computers will no longer be capable of surfing the web.
The only way users of these computers will then be able to visit a website will be by typing in its actual IP address. (Source: slashgear.com)
Most reputable antivirus security software can detect and remove DNS Changer. This means that any users who don't have regularly scheduled virus scans may find it worthwhile to run a manual scan before Monday, just in case.
As a service to the public, the FBI maintains websites that can check a computer for the DNS Changer virus and help those still infected get rid of it.
