How to Get More Space to Configure or Add Firefox Buttons

Do you find things are getting crowded across the top of your Firefox browser? Here’s a neat way to get more space—add a vertical toolbar. Today’s widescreen displays make it appealing to place some of the buttons that you use on the side instead of along the top of a window. An extension called Vertical Toolbar provides a handy new place to organize your browser buttons. Buttons can be added by the same drag and drop procedure as for other Firefox toolbars. The toolbar can be configured to hide automatically but is unobtrusive even when in use. It can be placed on either the right or left side. Figure 1 gives an example showing the toolbar placed on the left of the window. A selection of buttons in the toolbar area is highlighted in yellow. More buttons are at the bottom of the window and not shown in the graphic. Configuring the toolbar can be done by right-clicking an empty spot in the toolbar and choosing “Vertical Toolbar Options”. Figure 2 below shows the dialog that opens.

Vertical Toolbar can be installed from Mozilla Add-Ons. Note that it is version 0.2.4 so there may be bugs. I have started using it on Firefox 7.01 in Windows 7 and haven’t had any problems so far. I like it but you might want to look at the user reviews on the Mozilla page.
